Sønderborg is almost entirely surrounded by water. A red-brick Renaissance castle sits on the headland between the Alssund strait and Flensburg Fjord, a redeveloped harbourfront stretches along the sound, and the Dybbøl battlefield ridge rises to the west with open grazed landscape and views back over the town. It's a town where the backdrop shifts character completely depending on which direction you face.

I travel to Sønderborg for weddings, couples shoots and family sessions across the area. Sandbjerg Gods, a historic manor estate north of town set between a lake and the sound, is the strongest venue for couples wanting waterfront grounds and indoor ceremony options in one place. Augustenborg, about 10 km north, adds fjord and palace-garden views for smaller gatherings. Sønderborg Slot itself anchors the old town with one of the Nordics' earliest Protestant chapels inside and sound views from the headland outside.
