Herning is unlike any other city I shoot in. There's no medieval core here -- instead the eastern edge of town is home to Birk Centerpark, a deliberate fusion of modernist architecture, large-scale outdoor sculpture, and open heath landscape. Clean white buildings, geometric forms, and C.Th. Sørensen's labyrinth of tall hornbeam hedges shaped into circles and polygons give a graphic, contemporary backdrop that works precisely because it looks nothing like a traditional Danish town.

I travel to Herning for weddings, couples shoots and family sessions across the area. For civil ceremonies, Herningsholm Museum holds Saturday ceremonies in the Riddersalen from April through September. Skarrildhus, an old manor in a riverside park on the heath about 20 km southwest, is the stronger option for couples wanting garden ceremonies and overnight accommodation in one place. Outdoors, the Skulpturparken in Birk and the Geometric Gardens give two very different open-air settings within walking distance of each other.
